Biography:

My career has been focused on transition metal (iron, copper, zinc, molybdenum,…) transport. I obtained my PhD at Universidad de Granada-CSIC in 2005 working on mechanisms of metal tolerance in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. I did three postdocs: metal imaging in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (2006), structure-function of metal transporting P-type ATPases (2006-2009), and, as a Marie Curie fellow, biochemistry of Arabidopsis iron transporter IRT1 (2010). On 2011, I joined Centro de Biotecnología y Genómica de Plantas (UPM-INIA) as a Ramón y Cajal Fellow, in a tenure-like position. After obtaining a ERC Starting Grant in 2014, I was tenured and became a Group Leader. My group is interested in studying how plant-associated microorganisms affect and are affected by transition metal homeostasis in the host plant. Using as a model Medicago truncatula, we have been able to determine the pathway that metals primarily use to reach the nodule and identified the transporters responsible for iron, zinc, and molybdate uptake by rhizobia-infected nodule cells.
